Find Covington County Civil Dockets

Start your Covington County civil docket search with three things: the party names, the case number, and which court holds the claim. The Covington County civil court docket lists every filing, service notice, motion, hearing, order, and judgment in a noncriminal case. Alabama sells remote access to those records, and the local trial court clerk offers public inspection for ordinary ones. Know which division you need before you look. Circuit, District, small claims, domestic relations, municipal, and probate dockets sit in different hands. Dates matter too. A request, a hearing notice, and a final ruling are three distinct events, so read the sequence carefully rather than trusting a single line.

Covington Civil Docket Access Routes

Remote access is convenient. The clerk is still the backbone. Alacourt.com sells subscriptions to Alabama trial records. And at One North Court Square in Andalusia, the Circuit Clerk of Covington County keeps the Circuit and District civil files along with a public electronic inspection terminal. Under Rule 401, anyone may view the ordinary electronic docket and public court record at the clerk's office free during business hours. Call 334-428-2520 before you drive over. Ask about the terminal, file formats, hours, and copy cutoff times.

The counter, phone, and mail routes still count when no image appears online. Give the clerk the case number, case style, division, filing year, docket-entry date, and document title. Ask for a quote before you send any payment. Plain or certified copies are both available, and the clerk can explain an archived search. Probate estates take a separate Probate Court path. Municipal civil or ordinance matters stay with the city clerk unless an appeal creates a Circuit entry.

What a Civil Docket Shows

Every Covington County civil docket opens with the basics. Court, case number, caption, parties, roles, filing date, case type, and status all appear at the top. From there it becomes a chronology. An electronically filed document may carry its own date and time. The docket then tracks summons and service, an answer, motions and responses, notices, hearings, orders, and judgment. Where it applies, you may also see the judgment sum, interest, costs, credits, execution, garnishment, satisfaction, or appeal.

Case NumberThe court/type prefix, year, and sequence, such as CV, DV, SM, or DR.
PartiesPlaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent, with counsel when displayed.
FilingsComplaint or petition, answer, motion, response, notice, order, and other dated events.
SettingsHearing dates, event types, and assignment details when the selected record provides them.
JudgmentThe result, date, amount and costs when relevant, plus later enforcement or satisfaction entries.

The Case Action Summary is an index and a history. It is not a clerk-certified judgment. If you need the document itself, give the Covington County Circuit Clerk its date and title.

Covington Civil Docket Chronology

Each entry in a Covington County civil case gets its meaning from what came before. A complaint or petition opens the matter. Summons and service entries show the effort to notify the other side. Next comes an answer or a default stage. Discovery activity, motions, responses, hearing notices, and orders can then push the case toward trial, summary judgment, dismissal, or another dispositive ruling.

Docket flow: Complaint or Petition › Summons and Service › Answer or Default Stage › Motion and Response › Hearing › Order or Trial › Judgment › Enforcement or Appeal

After judgment, the docket may show execution, garnishment, credits, satisfaction, or an appeal. Read carefully. A motion is a request, not a ruling. A request for default is not the same as a default judgment. And a satisfaction only means the judgment record reflects payment or discharge; it does not erase the original claim as if it were dismissed.

Types of Civil Cases on the Docket

The Circuit Clerk keeps Circuit Civil, District Civil, Small Claims, Domestic Relations, and Child Support files. Current Alabama guidance puts civil claims above $20,000 exclusively in Circuit Court. Between $6,000 and $20,000, Circuit and District Courts share jurisdiction. District Court handles claims up to $20,000, unlawful detainer matters, and its Small Claims division. One caution applies here. The older Covington fee chart relies on outdated dollar bands, so let current law and court guidance control the routing.

  • Circuit civil claims above the District Court's limit and other matters within Circuit jurisdiction.
  • District civil claims, including unlawful detainer proceedings within District jurisdiction.
  • Small Claims cases kept as a District Court docket category.
  • Domestic Relations cases, shown separately from general Circuit civil matters.
  • Child Support records maintained by the unified Circuit Clerk.

A probate estate does not land in Just One Look just because the dispute feels civil. The Covington County Judge of Probate keeps those dockets separately.

Covington Civil Docket Jurisdiction

Case value is only one routing fact, but it is a handy one. Under current jurisdiction material, any claim above $20,000 belongs exclusively in Circuit Court. Claims above $6,000 through $20,000 sit in the shared range. Circuit and District both work there. District Court takes civil matters up to $20,000. Small Claims remains a District division. Where does a filed Covington County civil docket actually live? Check the caption and the case-number prefix to confirm it.

Never guess the case number from the dollar amount alone. Search the filed record or ask the office that holds it.

Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets

A setting shows up in several forms on the Covington County civil docket: a notice, a Case Action Summary event, a scheduling order, or a court entry. Start reading from the first setting and move forward. An older notice stays on the docket even after a later order continues the hearing. A party asking for a continuance does not shift the date by itself. The court must grant it first.

When two dates clash, put the latest signed order next to the newest setting entry and call the assigned court with the full case number in hand. The Covington County court calendar process lays out the date-confirmation chain you can use. Lawyers may also get AlaFile electronic notices, but AlaFile handles filings. It is not the public docket search.

Covington Civil Docket Filing Context

Official fiscal year 2023 statistics reported 161 Covington Circuit civil filings. The District Court reported 256 other civil filings plus 664 Small Claims filings. Those numbers explain why a plain civil name search may reach across court layers. The figures count filings, not distinct people or disputes. Remember that when comparing totals.

Covington Civil Docket Documents

A Case Action Summary entry can name a complaint, order, judgment, writ, or garnishment. The image may not be shown. If Just One Look has no image, write down the entry date and title. Then ask the Covington County Circuit Clerk for that exact item. The portal sells case detail first. It charges $5 for the first 20 pages and $0.50 for each added page under its service terms.

A clerk-certified judgment carries the clerk's attestation. A screen image carries none. Rule 30 and the current clerk quote govern copy and certification charges. Say which document you need certified. Certifying one judgment is not the same as certifying an entire Covington County civil docket file.

Covington Civil Docket Terms

Read every outcome term beside the order that backs it. A voluntary dismissal or nonsuit is the claimant's own act. Court rules bind it. Summary judgment settles a claim without trial once the legal standard is met. Default judgment requires a failure to defend. It also requires the required court steps. A satisfied judgment shows later payment or discharge.

Motion
A request asking the court to enter an order.
Order
The judge's direction or ruling.
Default judgment
A judgment after failure to respond or defend and after required proof.
Garnishment
A post-judgment process aimed at property or funds held by another party.
Satisfaction
An entry showing that the judgment obligation has been paid or discharged.

These definitions separate the event label from the legal effect of the filed document.

Public Access to Civil Dockets

Ordinary Covington County civil dockets stay open. A constitution, law, court rule, or order must restrict them first. Domestic-relations information may be searchable while a fully private family filing stays confidential or sealed. Rule 303 requires redaction of most digits. It covers Social Security, taxpayer identification, and financial account numbers. Paying for a search does not sidestep those protections.

Key rules:

Alabama Rules 104, 201, 301, 303, and 401 govern public access, confidentiality, sealing, redaction, and clerk-office viewing.

Rule 30 of Judicial Administration governs clerk copies, searches, and certification.

Code of Alabama ยงยง36-12-40 through 36-12-45 provides a specific written request path for public writings.

The official statutory request page illustrates the request process.

Bring the Covington clerk a specific case number and document name, not an overbroad search. The Alabama Judicial System rules library publishes the official text of current amendments to every access rule.

Check the live rules. Access rules and procedures can change after an older form or chart was published, so the current text controls.

Covington Civil Docket Verification

A no-match result can come from spelling, the wrong court, a municipal or probate custody path, a restricted record, or filing age. Rule those out first. Do not assume the case does not exist. Older paper and microfilm records may need a separate clerk search and quote.

For a current case, set the newest Covington County civil docket entry beside the signed notice or order. For legal proof, request the exact certified judgment or order. That final check keeps a portal snapshot, a docket index, and an authenticated court document in their proper roles.

Covington Civil Docket Service Check

Service entries tell you whether process was issued, attempted, returned, or completed. A short event code may hide the full story. When the method, date, or recipient matters, open the return or request its image. Never infer a final judgment from service alone.

A Covington County civil docket also lists an answer, default request, or hearing after service. Read those later lines. They separate an attempt from completed notice. They also separate a default application from an entered default judgment.
